Road accidents, suicide, pregnancy and violence among top killers of world’s youth

Saturday, September 12, 2009

A World Health Organisation study published in The Lancet has revealed the main causes of death for people aged 10–24. It has described the majority of these deaths as preventable and suggested solutions to the problems.

97% of the 2.6 million fatalities annually occur in low- and middle-income countries. The age group comprises 1.8 billion people, 30% of the total population. 15% of female deaths were down to “maternal mortality” which included pregnancy complications, unsafe abortions, and mutilation of genitals. Road traffic accidents accounted for 10% of deaths.

6.3% of the deaths were suicides and 6% were down to violence. Tuberculosis and similar lung infections took 10% of the lives and HIV/AIDS killed 5.5%. Most of the deaths were in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Africa and Southeast Asia were also the only places where male deaths were not above those of females, as much of the maternal mortality occurred there. The data came from 2004.

In developed countries, 32% of the deaths were down to road accidents. “There has long been an assumption that young people are healthy, fit and they don’t die,” explained the report’s lead author, Australian children’s health expert George Patton. He goes on to say “I’ve certainly heard politicians and policy-makers make statements of that kind… Some of these problems, related to emotion, are actually very prominent causes not only of death in adolescence, but health problems later in life.”

The study said safer speed limits, more use of helmets and seatbelts, and better enforcement of drunk driving law could greatly curb the road deaths. Maternal deaths and sexually transmitted disease rates could be cut by sexual education, safe abortion clinics, pregnancy support, HIV testing and treatment, and access to contraceptives.

Violence and suicide could be reduced by education in life skills and an improved role of parents, the study found. It also sought reduction of availability of poisons, firearms, and other dangerous items. In the case of suicide, the study said more work was needed to help young people recover from acts of violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in both the short and long term. Alcohol access reduction was also requested.

The study was conducted by University College London’s Russell Viner, World Health Organization’s Krishna Bose and George Patton of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Harmonizing Kitchen And Living Rooms Siematic Kitchen

Harmonizing kitchen and living rooms Siematic Kitchen

by

Alok yadav

The contemporary world has been lacking the harmony between the kitchen and other part of the house as they considered it separate from the house, this delusion is not new, as in the past also kitchen designers have ignored this notion of kitchen designing, particularly kitchen has been considered a separate room altogether.

But in the recent past we have witnessed change in the concept and have seen designers screening kitchen as an incorporated branch of a larger entire unit rather than its own separate entity, offering a more fundamental approach to integrating as one of the most imperative room in the house.

One of the main aspects of linking kitchen and living areas is lighting which have moved away from basic fluorescents to the LED lighting that is more pleasing to the eye unlike fluorescents and spotlights which gives over power light.

Siematic kitchens are captivating the interest of modern people as urban houses are very space accustomed consequently the kitchen designers are now using their designing skills in the kitchen to give it an absolutely innovative and soothing appearance. The idea of siematic kitchen is to make the kitchen and the living space blend jointly yet at the same time very delicately separated.

One more supportive instrument in this combat to bring together the kitchen and the living room is color, the colors of the cabinets wall and floor coverings is now significantly vital in giving kitchen a modern look. Even though the plain white kitchen will perhaps not at all go absolutely out of trend, a lot of new colors are now offered that can harmonize your kitchen with the living area to enhance your experience.

Kitchens in UK are certainly not behind of this new innovation in the design of kitchen bringing together kitchen and the living room. In fact large numbers of people in UK are considering siematic kitchens over the old conventional one and it would not be wrong to comment that kitchens in UK are now considered an imperative part of the house and people are more serious in turning their kitchen into a modern kitchen.

Australian researchers confirm stress makes you sick

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

“Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Scientists say new medical diagnostic chip can sort cells anywhere with an inkjet

Thursday, February 9, 2017

On Monday, scientists from the Stanford University School of Medicine announced the invention of a new diagnostic tool that can sort cells by type: a tiny printable chip that can be manufactured using standard inkjet printers for possibly about one U.S. cent each. Lead researchers say this may bring early detection of cancer, tuberculosis, HIV and malaria to patients in low-income countries, where the survival rates for illnesses such as breast cancer can be half those of richer countries.

Existing methods tend to identify cell types using fluorescent or magnetic labels, which take time to attach, but this platform uses the phenomenon of dielectrophoresis: because different kinds of cells have different levels of receptivity to electrical fields, a trait called polarizability, when an electric potential gradient is activated around the chip, different cells are pulled in different directions at different speeds. This allows doctors to diagnose cancer by determining the number of tumor cells in a patient’s blood sample. Different chips can be printed to diagnose different diseases.

Physically, the scientists say, the system has two parts. Cells are held in a clear microfluidic chamber made of silicone. The chip itself is an electronic strip that can be printed onto flexible polyester. Most lab-on-a-chip devices must be manufactured by professional staff in specialized facilities called clean rooms and can take weeks, but the chip component of this system can be made almost anywhere in as little as twenty minutes. The chips cost approximately one U.S. cent to produce (US$0.01) and can be reused. For comparison, a standard flow cytometry machine can cost US$100,000 to purchase.

“Enabling early detection of diseases is one of the greatest opportunities we have for developing effective treatments,” said lead author and electrical engineer Dr. Rahim Esfandyarpour. “Maybe $1 in the U.S. doesn’t count that much, but somewhere in the developing world, it’s a lot of money.”

Senior author Dr. Ron Davis of the Stanford University Genome Technology Center compared this invention to that of low-cost genome sequencing, which helped lead to personalized medicine.

The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.

Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.

Reject Rejections To Your Application For Home Mortgage Refinance

By Rony Walker

Who doesn’t dislike rejection? We all live in fear of rejection – be it from parents, teachers, or friends. However, rejection becomes particularly painful and burdensome when it’s issued by a loan officer. So, give your application for home mortgage refinance the best chance to be accepted!

Application Anxiety

Filling out applications is an aspect of everyday modern living, but the Internet has made it much easier and faster. Whether we are applying to for a job, college admittance, a credit card, an auto loan, or a membership in the Big Ugly Chicken Flying Club, we apply with the hopes of being accepted. This also holds true when we submit an application for home mortgage refinance. To avoid receiving our application with a big red “DENIED” stamp across it, it is wise to know all about the application requirement itself.

Application Arrangement

Many lenders today offer online applications for a variety of loans. Usually, an application for home mortgage refinance will request for the following information.

* Employment information can include information, such as the applicant’s position, monthly income, and duration of employment.

* When you file your application for home mortgage refinance, you will also be asked to provide the approximate loan amount, the terms of repayment sought, the type of residence and property type, and the quantity of units.

* Housing expenses on an application for home mortgage refinance can include such expenditures as monthly rent payments, homeowner’s insurance, first and second mortgage, mortgage insurance, and property taxes.

* Liabilities that applicants list could include taxes, credit line, mortgage, installments, and revolving credit. Under a revolving credit, credit is repeatedly made available after repayment has been made.

* Assets reported can consist of the value of cash deposits, savings and checking accounts, automobiles, and life insurance.

* Personal information requested can include your name, birth date, number of dependents, educational level, contact information, and co-applicant’s information, should you have one.

Application Advice

When completing an application for home mortgage refinance, you should also consider some general approaches in the application process. These tips could help you avoid being denied a mortgage. First, as the saying goes, “honesty is the best policy.” Ensure that all data on your application is true, to the best of your knowledge. Lenders will probably do some additional checking on your mortgage and credit history after you have submitted your application. Furthermore, take the general approach that a monthly payment is more important than an interest rate. After turning on your TV in the middle of the afternoon, mortgage lenders’ commercials seem to tell us otherwise. But remember one simple mantra: sodas, sneakers, and houses are bought with money — not rates!

Rejection is part of life, so we must learn to deal with it. However, it need not be a part of your application for home mortgage refinance. Don’t let it be one.
