A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.
If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.
There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”
There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has completed its investigation into the ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 into New York’s Hudson River. The fifteen-month probe began after the Airbus A320 performed a water landing when bird strikes damaged both engines in a move dubbed the “Miracle on the Hudson” by the media. Nobody was killed.
The NTSB’s final report, adopted after a board meeting today, concluded that a combination of safety equipment better than the mandatory minimums and good reactions by the crew were the main reasons the 150 passengers and five crew survived. The board stated that the aircraft’s equipment met the standards required for “extended overwater operations”, equipment that was not needed for the January 2009 flight.
The aircraft was equiped with escape slides that doubled as water rafts at the front and aft emergency exits, but the aft ones were rendered unavailable. Airbus assumed when designing the aircraft that only one engine would be inoperative during an emergency ditching, and current emergency checklists assume plenty of prior warning for dual-engine failure since the aircraft would be at a high altitude. The A320 was at just 2,700 feet when the incident occurred, having just taken off when it collided with a flock of Canada geese, almost completely removing the engines’ ability to generate thrust.
The final report has blamed a number of factors for extensive fuselage damage caused in the impact, which cracked a rear bulkhead and caused the aircraft to flood, as well as taking the rear slides out of action. The board said standards aircraft should meet in ditchings — set by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) — were inadequate, training in industry was not sufficient for ditchings and the high level of tasks the crew had to focus on made it difficult for the pilot to maintain his airspeed. The pilot’s decision to ditch was credited as being the best possible solution to the emergency.
The NTSB noted that while the rear rafts failed, 64 people climbed into the forward rafts, and said many of these people would have been immersed in the frigid river. The board claimed that this could induce “cold shock”, which can lead to drowning within minutes.
The report found that the good visibility, calm water, nearby ferries which provided rescues within twenty minutes and good cockpit resource management, allowing the crew to maintain control, were further factors that contributed to the survival of those on board. However, it also found that “more creative and effective methods of conveying safety information to passengers” are required after learning that most passengers had not paid attention to the in-flight safety announcement. It also noted that many passengers had difficulty putting on the life vests supplied under the seats.
The report further stated that the accident was hard to predict due to the fact that bird strikes tend to occur much lower, usually below 500 feet. It considered the possibilities of fitting engine screens or redesigning engines to mitigate bird strike risk, but these proposals were rejected after consideration since they were deemed unfeasable.
NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman described the circumstances as “a great example of the professionalism of the crewmembers, air traffic controllers and emergency responders who all played a role in preserving the safety of everyone aboard.” She further discussed the safety recommendations the report will contain when it is released. “I believe the safety recommendations that have come out of this investigation have an extraordinary origin – a very serious accident in which everyone survived. Even in an accident where everyone survives, there are lessons learned and areas that could use improvement. Our report today takes these lessons learned so that, if our recommendations are implemented, every passenger and crewmember may have the opportunity to benefit from the advances in safety.” A total of 35 recommendations have been made seeking improved checklists for emergencies, better certification standards for aircraft and their engines, advances in crew training, better safety equipment and improved safety briefings to passengers.
One result of these findings is that the board will likely ask the FAA to require emergency equipment for water landings on all commercial aircraft. The FAA has until now held that such a move would place a disproportionately high cost on airlines.
Why Choose Blinds Over Curtains

A homeowner who just moved into a new home or who has renovated it may also be considering changing the windows. This may involve a decision between the blinds and the curtains. This decision may be a bit difficult to do, but there are certain advantages in using blinds that you cannot get from curtains.
Easy to Clean
If you clean curtains, you need to remove them from the window and get them to the washing machine. Since they are too bulky to be placed in the dryer, you still need to find a spot to hang and dry them without ruining the fabric. This is obviously a hassle process, which is opposite to cleaning blinds. You only need to dust them off with a rag, dusting cloth or vacuum cleaner. For vinyl or plastic slats, they can be washed and soaked in a tub with warm water quite easily. Cleaning the curtains is still more of a hassle.
Durable
Curtains are not ideal for homes with pets. Cats and dogs are particularly playful with anything that moves or sways. They might keep on playing and clawing the curtains with their teeth and claws, resulting to ruined fabric. Curtains also present danger to your pets because they might get entangled while playing. On the other hand, pets may have a hard time of reaching the window blinds, especially if you are using verticals. Moreover, you can easily replace a damaged slat or a broken cord. The replacement process is quite simple so you can do it alone without calling a professional.
Reduces Allergens
Curtains can easily become homes or nesting grounds of animal dander or dust mites, which can easily trigger allergies in the people living at your home. This is especially dangerous if you have kids or older people at home or when you have someone with asthma, a serious condition. Since window blinds are easier to clean, you can prevent the growth of allergens at home.
Looks Modern
Curtains are more traditional than the use of window blinds. If you want your home to look neat and modern, the blinds are the solution to this. They might appear simple but they still look attractive.
Light Control
Curtains are good at keeping the light out but if you want more light, a problem arises because curtains still block light even when they are kept to the sides. Window blinds can give a room a lighter and brighter atmosphere if you want to flood the room with more light. They are also good at blocking off light by closing the slats.
Easy to Use
Curtains are sometimes hard to close or open. Your kids may not even be able to manage them. On the other hand, window blinds are simple operated with a movement of the wrist to close or open them.
Good Ventilation
Curtains usually absorb all the odours that pass through your home. If you keep your curtains closed, the entire house will still smell like the foods that you had for dinner the other night. Plastic window blinds keep off odours from their material.
too.

New Delhi authorities hope a fierce looking primate will solve the problem of mischievous monkeys infilitratring the city’s subway system. The Hindustan Times reports that langurs will be used to scare away their smaller cousins. A langur-wallah (or handler) is being paid 6,900 rupees (US$ 167) a month as a retainer and “will be called in whenever there is a monkey problem” says Anuj Dayal of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. “There are too many monkeys” said Mr. Dayal.
In June, a monkey reportedly crawled through some pipes and into a subway car jumping around and making faces at passengers who were evacuated to another car while staff chased the creature.
Delhi is known to suffer from trouble brought on by monkeys. The animals are reported to invade homes, schools and government offices in the city. Scores of animals have moved in as the city expands into surrounding forests. In an effort to control the problem, the Delhi administration captured about 500 monkeys and took them to the outskirts of the city last year.

War protestor Cindy Sheehan, the mother of fallen soldier Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq 3 years ago, wrote on what has been published by the Daily Kos as a personal web journal on Monday morning, a day in observance of Memorial Day in the United States, that “This is my resignation letter as the ‘face’ of the American anti-war movement.”
Her son Casey would have been 28 years old Tuesday. In what she writes are meditations upon developments in Sheehan’s life after she began a war protest that led her and a following of people to Camp Casey, beside the Texas ranch of President Bush in August 2005, included the notion that, “The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning, however, was that Casey did indeed die for nothing. His precious lifeblood drained out in a country far away from his family who loves him, killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think.”
| I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me. | ||
In the text of Sheehan’s diary she is unable to reconcile herself with the Democratic Party that on Thursday, May 24, succumbed to the Bush administration on language for a troop funding bill that at one time tied funding to a time limit for U.S. involvement in Iraq. The presidential veto of that legislation to set a deadline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq resulted in the U.S. Congress caving to executive branch over the issue of war funding, and may have been the final straw for Sheehan.
“I am deemed a radical because I believe that partisan politics should be left to the wayside when hundreds of thousands of people are dying for a war based on lies that is supported by Democrats and Republican alike,” wrote Sheehan.
Sheehan said that she has spent every bit of money that she has received as compensation for the loss of her son from the U.S. government, and as a person who garnished speaking fees from the national attention on her campaign against the Iraq war, on trying to bring peace.
“I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost,” wrote Sheehan.

If you want to learn how to install cellular blinds, it is extremely important for you to understand what cellular blinds are and how they differ from traditional blinds. This article will help you to find out what those blinds are and how you can install them on your windows properly.
Cellular Blinds Defined
This refers to the type of window accessory that is characterized by the honeycombed shape. These types of blinds can be considered as the most energy efficient window covering because the circular compartments that the honeycomb shapes can provide proceeds to trap the air from outside. This way, it will be able to provide natural ventilation from the blinds themselves.
Installing the Blinds
In order to do this properly, you would need to have the following materials:
Your own power drill and bit
Measuring tape
Screwdriver, level, and pencil
Once you gain access to these materials, you will have to follow the subsequent steps to successfully install your Fixed Awnings.
1. First, make sure that youre able to fasten at least two secure brackets on either side of the mount. If you have a wider shade, you should place the brackets equally across the whole width of the sheet itself.
2. Make sure that the brackets will not interfere with the operating mechanisms of your contraption.
3. After this, you can proceed to installing the inside mount by positioning the brackets 1 inches to 2 inches inward from each side of the window.
4. Place it along the top of the window opening.
5. If the window is 3 or more inches deep it would be best for you to place the brackets so that it is 2 inches away from the front window. If your window opening is a bit shallower, decrease the distance about half an inch.
6. You can use at least one screw to stick the brackets to the upper window frame.
7. For the external wall mount, you can center your blinds and remember the bracket locations through simple markings.
8. If you are not going to use a stud, you can use drills to create a hole onto the wall to attach the anchors to. Make sure that the holes are aligned with your brackets.
9. You must secure the brackets onto the wall by drilling holes at the back of the brackets as well.
Additional Reminders
If the bracket is spring loaded, you should be able to hook up the front lip inside the head rails. You ought to rotate the head rail down and inside until the anterior of the head rail clips onto the bracket.
For cord-operated shades, you should pull the cord towards you to release the lock and subsequently use the shade.
To lock the shade, you should pull the cord outward. Be sure that the cords would be placed out of the childrens reach.
Conclusion
If you have cordless shades, look for the handles that are designed to lift the shades up or down. After locating it, clip it into whatever direction you want it to go. You can also clip it to the mid rail if that is how it is designed. Augustus Sol Invictus, an Orlando, Florida attorney currently seeking the Libertarian Party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by former Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, took part in a short interview with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn to discuss his background, political views, and unorthodox campaign for the Senate.
Invictus, whose name was changed from his birth name to the Latin for “majestic unconquered sun”, has received media coverage for previously expressing fascistic views and participating in pagan rituals. While in law school, he penned an article advocating a eugenics program, and in 2013, he wrote a “departure memo” renouncing his U.S. citizenship and law license while announcing plans to go into the wilderness until a civil war. He returned after making a pilgrimage from Orlando to the Mojave Desert, where he fasted for a week. Upon his return to Florida, he sacrificed a goat and drank its blood. Former Libertarian Party of Florida chairman Adrian Wyllie resigned his chairmanship in protest of Invictus’s candidacy.
Though initially uncontested for the nomination, Invictus has recently received a challenge from information technology specialist Paul Stanton. Political operative Roger Stone opened an exploratory committee to consider running for the nomination but has not shown further interest. The primary election is to be held August 30. To qualify for the ballot, a candidate must either pay a US$10,000 fee or collect 100,000 signatures.
