Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Why Mlt Is The Best Career Option After The 2020 Pandemic

Have you ever wondered who conducts the detailed medical laboratory testing for your glucose levels, cholesterol levels, or RT-PCR and analyzes the results? These professionals have always been here, saving numerous lives, but in the background.

Who are Medical Lab Technicians?

Medical Laboratory Technicians are health professionals concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. These paramedical healthcare professionals belong to the field of allied health sciences. Other personnel like radiography technicians, operation theatre technicians (OTT) etc., also belong to the same group.

The 2020 crisis and the role of MLT

Since Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) first emerged in December 2019, the disease has evolved into a pandemic overnight. As soon as the causative pathogen, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified, a laboratory diagnosis was established and has played an essential role in confirming a clinical diagnosis of COVID -19. Additional laboratory biochemical tests, including monitoring the change in blood cells, coagulation, liver function, cardiac markers, and inflammatory responses, are also critical in combating COVID-19. With the increase in the number of patients and number of asymptomatic cases, clinical laboratories are facing enormous challenges in:

-adopting diagnostic approaches that can rapidly and accurately identify infected persons and

-adopting strategies that can detect disease progression allowing stratification of suffering patients for appropriate care.

These are urgently needed and highlight the requirement of laboratory technicians in combating COVID-19.

MLTs provide up to 70 percent of patients’ laboratory testing to physicians so they can provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

A study concluded that 94 percent of the objective medical data in the patient record comes from laboratory technicians. While the world screams for “more tests” during the SARSCoV2 pandemic, most of us would agree that our largest hurdle to help our patients is the lack of medical lab technicians who conduct these numerous tests.

Moreover, people do not stop having heart disease, diabetes, influenza infections, pregnancies, just because of a single virus spreading the world over. So, these tests also need to be done on a regular basis.

So with the appearance of such an unprecedented situation, the worth of MLT has risen and has shifted the world’s focus on Medical Laboratory Technicians.

 • These MLT professionals are juggling dozens and dozens of tests, and play the role of quality inspector. As if the specimen is not collected correctly by a nurse, phlebotomist, doctor, or another professional, the laboratory test will not be valid.
 • The spread of COVID-19 is due to a lack of testing or patient awareness. That positive or negative result impacts patient responses in our communities and the isolation protocols. These can minimize the spread of the disease. Testing hence has an impact far beyond a positive or negative confirmation of COVID-19 for many individuals.
 • Medical laboratory technicians spend countless hours collecting, conducting, correlating, and validating tests. There are very strict rules and policies that must be followed in the lab to ensure the right result is reported out on the right patient. Many laboratories invest in accreditation programs and continued proficiency testing to ensure the staff performs tests in accordance with laboratory procedures and guidelines. Due to the critical nature of what they do, labs are highly regulated and require medical technologists and technicians to obtain education qualifications, certifications, and continued training for error-free performance.
 • They even make sure that the equipment performs the tests accurately.
 • The workload for many labs has dramatically increased due to COVID-19 testing. The increase in demand has burdened the labs to add instrumentation and reporting mechanisms and implement additional procedures and staff training. Both manufacturers and laboratories are working to meet the clinical demands imposed by this pandemic.
 • A patient never meets the medical laboratory professionals who spend hours determining their test results. The lab and technicians have always been there, behind the scenes, supporting patient care teams.

This current global pandemic highlights the key role that laboratorians play in the entire healthcare space and how critical it is in patient-care and emphasizes the shortage of medical laboratory technicians and the respect they deserve.

What does a Medical Laboratory Technician do?

 • Collects, stores, and preserves samples of blood and other bodily fluids.
 • Analysis and examines bodily fluids.
 • Determines the level of chemicals in the Urine.
 • Matches blood samples for effective transfusions in case of emergency and trauma
 • Maintain the lab equipment.
 • Are responsible for biomedical waste management
 • Quality control based on NABL regulations has to be taken care of by them.
 • Evaluate different blood cells & diagnose the changes or pathology therein.
 • Conducts biochemistry tests to measure blood composition, hormones, enzymes, and drug levels
 • Microbiological identification of various pathogens affecting the human body including all viruses, bacteria, and other disease-causing pathogens.

In general, the medical lab technologists assist and help the doctors reach a confirmed diagnosis and devise an appropriate treatment plan. MLT can be called the doctor’s doctor.

Job opportunities

 • Hospitals, labs, diagnostic centers, nursing homes.
 • Academics – college and universities
 • Medical writing
 • International health services (Red Cross Society)
 • Government health services
 • Blood banks
 • Forensic labs
 • Clinical research laboratories
 • Applications specialists

Remuneration

At the trainee level, executives can directly join a laboratory or a hospital and earn somewhere between Rs.10,000 to Rs 20,000 per month. With experience, one can earn between Rs 30,000 to Rs 40.000. The senior technologists earn more than Rs 40,000.

In addition to this, many employers offer healthcare benefits and other allowances to their employees.

How to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist?

To become a part of this healthcare workforce there are programs of varying durations available;

PETA protests Burberry in White Plains, NY

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Today, at 12:00 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) the Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a “naked” protest in White Plains, New York. The target of the protest was British fashion house, Burberry, and their fur practices.

Two “naked” female PETA members, wearing nothing but bikini bottoms and body paint held billboards with the slogan, “When plaid goes bad.” The body paint was done in the trademarked Burberry Check plaid design.

Two other PETA members were there handing out leaflets and showing a video presentation. The painted protesters were spattered with far less fake blood than other documented PETA protests in this campaign.

PETA is protesting Burberry for the company’s use of fur in its products and how it is obtained. The group has staged similar protests around the world in its ongoing “BloodyBurberry”-campaign.

The protest took place at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Bloomingdale Road in front of the The Westchester, an upscale shopping mall owned by Simon Property Group. Burberry has a retail store in the mall.

This corner is far from the mall’s entrances and sees little pedestrian traffic. However, it does see heavy traffic by motorists, before whom the protestors were in plain sight. While Wikinews was on the scene, police and news media were the only other pedestrians.

The police presence was significant, numbering at least two vehicles and two mounted police officers. But since there was no crowd to control, they just hung back. Media was also there in numbers. At least two television crews could be observed.

As far as Wikinews can tell, Burberry has yet to make any public comment about any of the “BloodyBurberry” protests.

The Onion: An interview with ‘America’s Finest News Source’

Sunday, November 25, 2007

Despite the hopes of many University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) students, The Onion was not named after their student center. “People always ask questions about where the name The Onion came from,” said President Sean Mills in an interview with David Shankbone, “and when I recently asked Tim Keck, who was one of the founders, he told me the name—I’ve never heard this story about ‘see you at the un-yun’—he said it was literally that his Uncle said he should call it The Onion when he saw him and Chris Johnson eating an onion sandwich. They had literally just cut up the onion and put it on bread.” According to Editorial Manager Chet Clem, their food budget was so low when they started the paper that they were down to white bread and onions.

Long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, Heck and Johnson envisioned a publication that would parody the news—and news reporting—when they were students at UW in 1988. Since its inception, The Onion has become a veritable news parody empire, with a print edition, a website that drew 5,000,000 unique visitors in the month of October, personal ads, a 24 hour news network, podcasts, and a recently launched world atlas called Our Dumb World. Al Gore and General Tommy Franks casually rattle off their favorite headlines (Gore’s was when The Onion reported he and Tipper were having the best sex of their lives after his 2000 Electoral College defeat). Many of their writers have gone on to wield great influence on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert‘s news parody shows.

And we are sorry to break the news to all you amateur headline writers: your submissions do not even get read.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Chet Clem and Sean Mills about the news empire that has become The Onion.

Evergrande real estate firm makes missed September bond payment, avoids default

Saturday, October 23, 2021

China property giant Evergrande Group wired USD83.5 million in interest owed in an offshore bond from September 23 on Thursday, temporarily averting default, according to a Reuters source and Chinese newspaper Securities Times.

The wire to a Citibank fiduciary account following a 30-day grace period came after assurances by various members of the Chinese government, Reuters reported. At a Beijing forum Wednesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He described the risks as controllable, and chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission Yi Huiman said that while authorities needed to curb excessive debt more broadly by “improv[ing] the effectiveness of the constraint mechanism on debt financing”, the matter would be dealt with properly.

Once China’s top real estate developer, Evergrande had accumulated approximately USD305 billion in liabilities, two per cent of the Chinese gross national product, after “dwindling resources” cut its value by 80%, according to Reuters. September data revealed Chinese home sales by value fell by nearly 17% year-on-year, according to The Guardian, and fears over its default led to a slowdown in China’s third quarter GDP growth to a year low of 4.9%. Two sale negotiations with rival developers Hopson Development and Yuexiu, valued at USD2.6 billion and USD1.7 billion, respectively, were suspended, reportedly due to a lack of consent by the government of Guangdong province currently overseeing Evergrande’s restructuring.

News of Evergrande’s remittance caused its shares to rise by as much as 7.8% this morning after a two-week pause in trading for the anticipated sale of 50.1% in Evergrande Property Services Group, and offering some reprieve for bondholders, according to Reuters. Portfolio manager at GaoTeng Global Asset Management James Wong, interviewed by The Guardian, called the news “a positive surprise”, adding “[i]f Evergrande pays this time, I don’t see why it won’t pay the next time.” Jun Rong Yeap for IG Asia pte., interviewed by Bloomberg, said the report “overturned” the narrative “that Evergrande will face difficulty in securing cash ahead”.

Further missed payments are due October 29 and November 11 after similar 30-day grace periods; including yesterday’s USD83.5 million, nearly USD280 million is owed to bondholders.

Stocks have been down for many major Chinese developers: Reuters Wednesday reported year-to-date stock prices fell 87.8% for Sinic Holdings, currently in Fitch Ratings’ ‘restricted default’ after failing to make an October 18 bond payment valued, according to The Guardian, at USD246 million; 80.2% for Evergrande itself; 78.3% for E-House, 58.5% for Fantasia Holdings and 54.6% for Kaisa Group, which defaulted in 2015 and had bonds reach record lows.

Estimates of the Chinese real estate market’s size range from 16 to 25% of the Chinese gross domestic product, according to The Guardian. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aim to transform the country’s economy from one of debt-fuelled “inflated” growth to one of improved “quality and returns” included imposing regulations on developers that limited their capacity to borrow. A Guardian comment piece from economist George Magnus published on October 15 made reference to China’s “ghost cities” and “rampant credit creation” that has given rise to high vacancy rates and the “financialisaton of housing”.

Four Categories Of Plumbing Service Every Homeowner Should Be Aware Of

byAlma Abell

Although many long-time homeowners have their go-to plumbers in Atlanta for everyday plumbing concerns, not all plumbers are able to respond to all plumbing needs. In fact, there are four key categories of plumbing service: maintenance, service and repair, emergency service, and water filtration systems service. Whenever possible, try to select a plumber that is able to provide all four types of service.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance checks and tune-ups can be vital for the efficiency and overall upkeep of your home’s plumbing. Homeowners are generally encouraged to schedule a maintenance visit every year. These maintenance visits can help to keep your pipes and appliances in working order by preventing any small existing problems from worsening. Quality plumbers in Atlanta will check for any exposed leaks, test water pressure, and make sure that all drains have no blockages.

Service and Repair

Perhaps the most common reason that homeowners call the plumber is for low-order concerns, such as leaky faucets, clogged drains, and poor water pressure. Most plumbers deal with these types of issues every day, and can easily assist you. The ideal plumbing repair service will respond to these problems quickly and professionally, allowing you to get on with your day.

Emergency Service

Sometimes, pluming issues are direr than a mere leaky faucet. In cases such as these, you need to have an experienced plumber on file to get rapid service. Plumbers offering emergency service should be at your door as soon as possible after you make the call, working to solve the problem and protect your home from any water or waste damage.

Water Filtration Systems

Particularly when moving into a new home, many homeowners find that their tap water does not meet their taste expectations. There are several simple mechanisms that your plumber can put in place to solve this problem and improve the taste of your tap water. However, always remember that water purification systems should only be installed by a licensed and experienced plumber.

The Ideal Plumbing Service Provider

Homeowners should be aware of the many different services associated with plumbing. Generally speaking, you should do your best to select a plumbing service provider with experience in all four categories. That way, you can call a single number for all of your plumbing needs and never have to be worried about being left hanging. Versatile plumbers in Atlanta that are able to work to meet your needs are far more helpful than those that cannot do so. Click here for more information.

When looking at plumbers in Atlanta, it’s important to keep in mind the four different categories of plumbing service that you may require of your plumber. These categories are maintenance, service and repair, emergency service, and water filtration systems. The most qualified plumbers in Atlanta should be able to assist you in any of these four areas. Get in touch with R.S. Andrews. Atlanta for more details.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

China downgrades its diplomatic relations with Lithuania over Taiwan

Sunday, November 21, 2021

The Chinese Government downgraded its diplomatic ties with Lithuania. The Baltic state had allowed Taiwan to establish a ‘de facto’ representative’s office in the country’s capital. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China issued a press statement which clearly expressed “strong dissatisfaction” over Lithuania’s move in approving Taiwan to open a representative’s office in Vilnius.

Lithuania expressed regret over China’s comments and defended its right to maintain relations with Taiwan. China claims this was a violation of the ‘One-China Policy’. On 14 November, the Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyt? said, “Our government’s programme says Lithuania wants a more intense economic, cultural and scientific relationship with Taiwan, I want to emphasize that this step does not mean any conflict or disagreement with the ‘One-China policy’.”

Beijing had already expressed concerns over the representative’s office using the name ‘Taiwan’ and had recalled its ambassador from its embassy in Lithuania in August. China has decided to lower its level of relations by appointing a chargé d’affaires instead of an ambassador. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told at a news conference, “Lithuania only has itself to blame, it will have to pay for what it did.” Meanwhile China is discussing a new legislation that would make supporters of Taiwan criminal offenders. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian said in a statement earlier this month, that people listed in the list of supporters of Taiwan’s Independence would face serious criminal sanctions.

Poland has also shown support towards Lithuania’s decision of approving to establish a representative’s office of Taiwan in Vilnius. The United States has also offered financial support to Lithuania to help it withstand Chinese pressure. Lithuania will also sign a $600 million export credit agreement with the U.S. Export-Import Bank on November 24. Lithuania also decided to pull out from the Beijing-led trade grouping with Central European countries.

Looking For A Change? Plastic Surgery Advice You Can Use

Looking For a Change? Plastic Surgery Advice You Can Use

by

Narconon Fresh Start

Average individuals around the world are making drastic decisions to change their lives and improve their appearance. Sometimes these decisions involve plastic surgery. If you are one of the millions of individuals considering these procedures, you probably have a lot of questions. This article will help to answer some of those questions and remove some of the confusion surrounding these procedures.

You want to do your best to find a surgeon that will be truthful and honest with you at all times. Make sure to ask about the risks involved with your procedure. If the surgeon acts like there is no possible risk and discounts your fears, you should not allow him to do your surgery.

When it comes to your health and plastic surgery, be sure that you make sure that you are having plastic surgery done for the right reasons. This is important because you want to make sure that you decide why you are having it done in order to ensure that you are not making a poor decision.

Make sure your plastic surgeon is board certified. Board certified surgeons have to undergo important on-going training. They must continue to meet certain criteria. If you visit with a surgeon who is not board certified, you might be compromising your safety. Even at a low price, it is not worth it.

Have you already checked your surgeon\’s school, and now you feel completely comfortable? Well, there is one more step that you should look into- malpractice. All malpractice lawsuits are available on the public record. This can help you to see if your potential surgeon has had any past botch jobs.

One important aspect of surgeon research prior to plastic surgery is an investigation of the surgeon\’s malpractice history. You want to know if he or she has had any claims filed against him or her. Although any surgeon may end up with a dissatisfied patient, multiple claims would be a big red flag.

Be comfortable when you go in for a procedure. Although plastic surgery is elective and relatively minor, it\’s still surgery. The entire process is inherently stressful. In order to minimize your stress, and make your surgery go more smoothly, take the time to familiarize yourself with the team that will be working with you. Visit the hospital, or clinic ahead of time. This way it\’s not an unfamiliar environment.

Talk to your doctor about what specific procedure is going to get used during the surgery to prevent blood clot. Knowing this will not only inform you as to what is going on while you are unconscious, but will also give you indications of possible risks and what the surgical team can do about them.

Be in the best health possible when getting plastic surgery done in order to avoid complications. Eating healthy and quitting smoking can be two of the greatest things you can do to ensure that you stay healthy. Consider taking some Vitamins A and C as it can also help with the process.

Even surgeries performed by the most experienced plastic surgeons have the potential to leave scars. Before committing to a procedure, consider the health of your skin and whether or not you are prone to scarring. Those with pale and fairer skin are far more likely to experience reddened, welt-like scars. Darker skin tones are at risk of developing dark, keloidal scarring.

Plastic surgery is an increasingly common event for many individuals. If you are one of those individuals, you might have a lot of questions and need answers. Hopefully, this article has provided some of those answers and removed some of the confusion surrounding these medical procedures. Use the information wisely to make good decisions.

Plastic surgery is usually a preference of lot as everyone in this world specially women\’s want to look beautiful and this method helps them to improve their beauty. Here we are dealing the same as

Dr. Humberto Uribe Morelli

Plastic surgeons in Colombia is specialist on beauty enhancement through various medical and non-medical procedures.
