Lawmakers ask US Secretary of State for Gaza crisis help

Friday, January 30, 2009

Democrats in the United States House of Representatives have sent a letter to new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, asking her to release funds to reconstruct agencies in the Gaza Strip.

The letter also said she should try to reason with Israel to allow people in Gaza in need of medical attention and emergency transportation between the Israel and Gaza border.

The letter, released to the AFP news agency, says “[w]e… urge you to express this concern directly to Israeli government officials”. The letter says the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) need an estimated $350 million dollars for rebuilding of Gaza and to provide relief to residents. “Failure to address this humanitarian emergency has the potential to produce a crisis of even more unspeakable proportions,” the letter added, “we therefore respectfully request that the State Department release emergency funds to UNRWA for reconstruction and humanitarian assistance”.

They also urged Clinton and her team to make a list of “actions taken to date and the strategy you will pursue to address the humanitarian crisis”, saying “[w]ith the ceasefire now in effect, it is critical that the United States play a leading role in alleviating the suffering of civilians in Gaza and we respectfully urge your assistance in this task”.

Israel began a ceasefire on January 18 after a 23 day offensive, in an attempt to stop rocket fire into Israel by Hamas militants, but has warned that they reserve the right to resume action if the shelling of Israel did not stop.

Why Public Relations Companies Play A Large Role In The Work Of Governments}

Why public relations companies play a large role in the work of governments

by

Ben FoxWould you be surprised to know that governments were the first to use public relations companies? Well, ever since governments have been running, they have in some way, used public relations in order to maintain a positive and good relationship with the public. Government and parliamentary affairs is a large matter and one that forms a major part of industry sectors. It is not only just national governments, but local governments, political parties and individual politicians that depend on the work of government public relations in order to ensure their representation within the media and also within parliament is kept positive.

Government consulting firms have been around much longer than consulting firms used by businesses. In the world of politics, representation is everything and can make the difference between a politician or party becoming elected and not. A close-knit relation with key media influencers also plays a large part and it is the work of the consulting firm to ensure their client is only written about in a positive way.

Government lobbying also plays a large part in the world of government public relations. It is often described that the work of the two different parties is extremely similar, and to an extent, it is. They both work to ensure their clients are able to operate easily and efficiently within their industry. Government lobbyists work to ensure that their politician or their party is voted into power. To do this, a government lobbyist often puts in place the following tactics:

Building relationships with other key politicians – government lobbying is all about ensuring that relationships are nurtured and can be called upon when followers are needed.

Forming close relationships with the media – this is where the line between government lobbying and public relations is often classed as being very similar. The media coverage needs to be just right in order to ensure success. Focusing on public support – often lobbyists try to rally the public support over specific issues in order to gain a momentum. This can prove extremely beneficial and public support can really sway the decisions or the opinions of key influencers.

The roles of government public relations are not too dissimilar to that of a government lobbyist. However, their work is specifically more focused on the representation of the individual, government or party within the media. Ensuring press releases are circulated and covered, social media is regularly monitored, there is sufficient coverage of their client in the media and that ultimately any negative coverage is diminished.

So there you have it, the reasons why public relations play such an important role for governments, individuals and political parties, not only in the UK, but anywhere around the world. The positive representation within the public eye can make the difference between the government, individual or political party gaining success and power, or loosing out. Therefore, the world of government public relations is an extremely important one.

Whitehouse Consultancy reviews about public relations companies and says that for any kind of services like Public Affairs, Political Consultancy, PR or Media Relations whitehouseconsulting.co.uk Will be your Right Choice.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Indonesian Health officials are concerned that a 9-year-old girl who died of the H5N1 Avian Flu virus, contracted the illness as a result of human to human transmission and officials say a team of experts are on the way to the area to determine if a cluster exists.

Wikinews interviews Amber Merritt Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketballer

Thursday, September 6, 2012

London, England— Tuesday, following her team’s 62–37 win over Mexico in the quarter-finals at the North Greewich Arena, Wikinews interviewed Amber Merrit of the Australian women’s national wheelchair basketball team.

In their next match, the Gliders will face the victors from the United States versus Canada, having suffered their first loss of this year’s Games to Canada on Sunday night by seven points.

((Laura Hale)) I’m excited to see you in London, because you were so fantastic in that interview.

[Wikinews previously interviewed Merrit, and teammates in July. —Ed.]

Amber Merrit: Thank you.

((WN)) Which state are you from?

AM: I’m from WA. [Western Australia —Ed.]

((WN)) You wheel change! What was wrong with your wheel?

AM: I smashed out three spokes. Someone hit me, and I lost three spokes in my chair.

((WN)) was that because you were playing really aggressively against Mexico?

AM: Yeah, or they were playing really aggressive against us.

((WN)) Watching that game it didn’t seem that they were playing that aggressive, in terms of they came in with set pieces; they weren’t doing the full-court press; they didn’t seem prepared for your offensive and defensive tenacity. ((Hawkeye7)) You kept on all holding them out, where they weren’t even getting across the centre line

AM: I think we have a really physical style of basketball where we’re going to press, and when we press we try to stop chairs and make sure they don’t get over that halfway line. They’re going to come out and play as hard as they can against us and sometimes there is that odd mishap where they might smash a few spokes cause they hit us. It happens.

((WN)) You tipped a lot in previous games. You haven’t tipped so much in this series.

AM: No, I’ve managed to keep my balance this time. Or maybe they haven’t hit me hard enough to put me down on the floor.

((WN)) Part of the appeal of wheelchair basketball, and I feel guilty admitting it, it watching you guys tip.

AM: And fall out. It’s embarrassing but I like it.

((WN)) You’ve got your next game coming up, which is going to be against the winner of the United States or Canada later today

AM: We’re not 100% sure yet who that’s going to be.

((WN)) Looking forward to meeting them?

AM: Yeah! Looking forward to coming up against them.

((WN)) Who would you prefer?

AM: I don’t know if I have a preference, to be honest. Whoever its going to be, we’re still going to go out there and play as hard as we can and take it to them as a team.

((WN)) Do you think you’ve been adequately prepared coming in to this, with your tournament in Sydney, your tournament in the Netherlands?

AM: Yeah, I think we’ve come in very well prepared for this tournament. We’ve been together for a while now as a team. Of course we had the Gliders and Rollers world challenge. We also went to Arnheim in the Netherlands for a pre-tournament, and we’ve trained together in Cardiff. And then after Cardiff we came in to London; so we’ve had that time together as a team and we’re doing really well.

((WN)) Does that give you an advantage over other teams?

AM: I’m not sure, because I don’t know what other teams have been doing behind the scenes as their training.

((WN)) Thank you very much.

AM: No worries!

The band’s ten-year anniversary will be reached at a point during the Canadian leg of the tour, which will be commemorated. “Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary,” said Jack White.

Time Management Games

Time Management Games

by

Dave Taylor

Many time management systems exist to assist those people who feel that their lives are overwhelmed with too much to do. Having too many things to remember or too many tasks to complete is a major source of stress in the workforce. Time management systems instruct people on ways to organize their concerns and cut down on time wasted by worrying about remembering things. Some of these systems are more popular than others.

One time management system that is very popular is Stephen Covey\’s book \”The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People\”. This book was first published in 1989, and is 372 pages long.It has sold more than 25 million copies in 15 years, and is available in 38 languages.

Covey\’s time management system centers around mastering seven key areas. These concepts focus on ideas such as taking responsibility for the things that happen in your life, concentrating on the final product as you imagined it, and acting cooperatively. Covey\’s system encourages creativity, imagination and understanding be mixed with organization and prioritizing in order to allot the most effort to the more important tasks. Taking care of all aspects of your life, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, is also a large part of Covey\’s time management system.

Another popular time management system is David Allen\’s \”Getting Things Done\”. Allen\’s book was first published in 2001, and is 267 pages long. It has been on the national best-seller list for years. A series of articles closely related to the book\’s topic can be downloaded free at Allen\’s professional website.

Allen\’s time management system focuses on organization. He covers not trusting your mind to remember things, as important tasks are often forgotten and valuable time is wasted trying to remember them. Allen encourages writing everything down, and then prioritizing and keeping track of all you\’ve written down. His time management system centers around the organization of these written ideas, and advocates a weekly review system to re-prioritize any remaining tasks as needed.

A third popular time management system is Julie Morganstern\’s \”Time Management From the Inside Out\”. This book was first published in 2000, and is 304 pages long. It has long been on the best-seller list.

Morganstern\’s time management system focuses on the three-step process of analyze, strategize, and attack. She encourages tackling the ideas that need doing in much the same way that one would in a messy room. Morganstern\’s time management system centers on the processes of sorting, discarding, and arranging ideas by their priority.

These three time management systems are only a few of the hundreds that exist. While different systems work for different people, each system offers solid foundations for managing time. The key to effective time management is to remember to put those skills you have learned into practice, rather than allowing the skills to become an additional means of wasting time. Whatever time management system you choose, you should be careful to not let the system itself become dreaded and procrastinated additional work.

First plane arrival for more than 10 years to renewed airport in Grozny, Russia

Thursday, October 5, 2006

Grozny, a city of the Chechen Republic, Russia, celebrated the arrival and the later departure of the first passenger aircraft, a Tu-134A-5, for more than 10 years. The renovated Severny (Northern) Airport opened prior to the 30th birthday of the Republican Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov, son of the former PM Akhmad Kadyrov who was killed by terrorists, though no official relation of these events has been confirmed.

The formal opening of Grozny airport occurred under tightened security precautions since the Chechen rebel threat still exists in the region. The airport was used as the base of the 46th Brigade of the Russian Interior troops.

The main building of the airport was heavily damaged by the years of Chechen Wars. Now it has been reconstructed in compliance with international standards.
