French presidential candidate Sarkozy accuses left parties of betraying left values

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Nicolas Sarkozy, the right-wing political party UMP’s candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections in France, which enters its first round next week, held a campaign meeting in Toulouse last Thursday, where he accused the left side political parties of betraying the ideals of Jaurès, Blum and other key socialist politicians. He compared the “left of old times” with the left nowadays, and said he wanted to “bring back to the heart of politics the values that the left side parties have betrayed.”

Former mayor of Toulouse Philippe Douste-Blazy welcomed more than 14 000 attendees to the city’s Parc des Expositions. He summarized the candidates political program by saying: “The Republic [of France, red.] is not about defending laxity and impunity for the agitators, it’s about guaranteeing the security and freedom of all through the respect of the laws and Justice.” Sarkozy was Minister of Interior Affairs during the 2005 suburban riots in France, when he instituted a zero-tolerance policy. Of one of Sarkozy’s rivals, François Bayrou, Douste-Blazy said that France didn’t need a President who “undergoes and refuses to make choices.”

In his speech of more than one hour, Sarkozy claimed the historical heritage of the founders of socialism and their values of right to work, payed holidays, social security, unemployment benefits, education, liberty of conscience, and of moral rights and the rights of the individual: “These values, I’ve wanted the Republican right side to reclaim them at a moment when the left side abandons them.” He also criticised François Hollande, chairman of the French Socialist Party, and with him his wife and the socialist candidate for the Presidential elections, Ségolène Royal, who, according to Sarkozy, “has forgotten Blum and Camus, and doesn’t know Jaurès.”

A week ago, Ségolène Royal held a speech in Carmaux, the home of Jaurès, where she proposed herself in continuity with Jaurès’ battle for the values of employment, concluding her speech by saying: “It’s important for the left side to know where we come from, because that helps also to foresee the future.”

On Wednesday, she held a meeting in Metz, where she accused Sarkozy of wanting to exercise power alone, of knowing everything, of wanting an unequal health care system and of following the laws of money. “He proposes us the law of the strongest. Do you want it? Me neither! And I propose to you the law of most justice.”

First arrests made in Singapore for possession of New Psychoactive Substances

Sunday, May 4, 2014

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) of Singapore announced yesterday the first arrests made following the listing of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) as Class A controlled drugs on Thursday, under the First Schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act. The suspects, two unnamed male Singaporeans, aged 22 and 23, were reportedly arrested at a shopping center in Tampines on Friday evening for possession of synthetic cannabis, also known as “K2”. Authorities recovered 71.7 g of the drug from the suspects.

Under suspicion from the CNB that the 22-year-old suspect was engaged in trafficking of the illegal substance, a further search of his home yielded an additional 22.3 g of synthetic cannabis, raising the total amount of the drug confiscated following the arrests to 94 g.

Synthetic cannabis, listed as an NPS, and known as a “legal high”, is one of a group of designer drugs created to stimulate the effects of controlled drugs including cocaine, Ecstasy, methamphetamine, and heroin. The CNB has linked NPS abuse to symptoms including severe intoxication, hallucinations, paranoia, seizures, cadiovascular problems, renal failure, and death.

Typically having chemical structure very similar but slightly different from controlled drugs, these substances have been illegalized, and their possession, consumption, trafficking, and manufacturing now carry penalties comparable to that of controlled drugs. Last year, under the Fifth Schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act, designed to study NPSs before their illegalization, they could be confiscated by authorities, but no further penalty would be levied.

The changes to NPS status follow increases over the past year in NPS trafficking and consumption, according to the CNB. Commenting on the move, a spokesperson for the CNB revealed the organization has reported at least thirty NPS seizures in the period from last May through this February. “Thus far,” the spokesperson noted, “synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic cathinones are the two more commonly detected NPS”.

Termed an “alarming new drug problem” by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, its World Drug Report 2013 indicated an increase to 348 NPSs in 2013, up from 251 in 2012. Capitalizing on their legality — which no longer holds in Singapore — NPSs have been known as “legal highs”, “research chemicals”, “plant food”, and “bath salts”.

Commenting on the illegalization of NPSs, Ng Ser Song, the director of the CNB, had this to say. “The drug situation is challenging and the number of repeat drug abusers and young drug abusers remains a concern. With the abuse and trafficking of NPS on the rise, listing these new psychoactive substances as Class A controlled drugs signals our unequivocal stance that these substances are illegal and no different from other controlled drugs.”

Under the recently enacted First Schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act, if found guilty of drug trafficking, the 22-year-old suspect may be penalized with a minimum of five years in prison and five strokes of the cane. The act also allows the possession or consumption of New Psychoactive Substances to be punished with a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and/or a $20,000 fine.

Redone The Overall Look Of The Garden With Outdoor Water Features

Submitted by: Mattis Bailey

At present, home decor includes both the interior decoration as well as the exterior portion of the house. When the topic arises about the makeover of the exterior region, most of the homeowners start thinking about odd jobs. For instance, construction of the driveway, house painting and so on.

Have you ever thought what else can make the outside region of the house beautiful? How about adding water features to spice up the reflection of your home? Home decor items like fountains are mostly used outside the house and sometimes as interior decoration as well. It adds an elegant touch to your garden and raises the value of the property in the market. Hence, install the fountain as soon as possible. Apart from decking up the house, fountains also create a soothing ambience. If you wish to enjoy a quiet summer evening, just bring out your garden chair and sit in the patio area. Relax yourself and enjoy the soothing sound of the dropping water from a distant and fluttering sound of the bird wings sitting on the fountain.

Still thinking what to do? Get impressive water features from Melbourne and choose the one that will suit best for your house. You can add few coloured gold fish in the water just for decoration. However, make sure the fountain has enough space to accommodate these fishes. At the same time, also make it a habit to drain out the water on every fortnight to keep it clean.

In order to add a few more innovations in this outdoor water feature, put LED lights on the edge. It will lighten up the water feature at night. If any corner of your garden is ignored and remain darken, install such fountain in that corner. Let the lights brighten up the corner. Many more varieties are available out there.

Now, you need to find out as to which one will suit best for your garden. Look for the ones that suits with the outer look of your house. Avoid picking up those fountains that will look absolutely out of place or something that is too expensive for your budget. Always, look for the one that will be affordable yet without compromising on the overall look of the fountain. Hence, remember these facts when you are buying it. Besides these factors, it s your duty to check the location where the fountain will be installed. If the fountain is going to run on electricity, make sure there is an electric point so that you can place the plug in it. If cleaning the fountain is a problem for you, try to place it in a place where dry leaves will not fall on it. Along with this, try to attach extra pipeline so that the water gets drained out automatically. Place the pipe in such a way so that the water falls directly in the lawn area. Hence, the water doesn t get wasted. However, just buying the fountain doesn t bring an end to your responsibility, you need to maintain its durability as well. As mentioned before, the stored water needs to be cleaned. Beside this, during winter try to cover up the fountain to protect it from cracking down. Just remember these facts once you buy the fountain. Do not try to ignore these facts even if you buy the best quality garden fountains from Melbourne.

Thus, from now on, redesigning the overall look of your house will no more a difficult job for you.

Law firm tries to ban new book by Cambridge Press

Sunday, October 5, 2008

The Schillings law firm in the United Kingdom, has attempted to remove certain content from an upcoming book by former Ambassador to the Central Asian Republic of Uzbekistan, Craig Murray. Schillings, a company which, according to Wikileaks, contains “well known UK censorship lawyers,” sent a letter to Cambridge University Press threatening libel action if the content is not removed from Murray’s book, The Catholic Orangemen of Togo, before publication.

According to Schilling, they sent the letter on behalf of ” Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Spicer […], C.E.O. of Aegis Defence Services Limited.”

“We have reason to believe that the Book may contain serious, untrue and damaging defamatory allegations about our client,” stated the letter. “Any widespread publication of the Book containing defamatory allegations concerning our client would be deeply damaging to our client’s personal and professional reputations and would cause him profound distress and anxiety. We remind you that you would be responsible for that damage and any subsequent republication of the allegations. We also put you on notice that you will be liable for any special damage or loss suffered by our client as a result of the Book and we reserve all our client’s rights in this regard.”

Speaking to Wikileaks, Murray responded to these claims by saying that there is “yet more depressing correspondence with my publisher today — it really is getting me down.”

“The publisher has an understandable fear of facing malicious and extremely expensive litigation under British libel laws, which exist to protect the reputations of the wealthy and the powerful,” continued the former ambassador, explaining the issue. “As my entire purpose is to expose unsavory truths about the wealthy and the powerful, I really do not see how we are going to solve this.”

Wikinews also spoke exclusively to Craig Murray on this issue. He made the following comments:

Libel law in the UK is notoriously used as a tool for the wealthy to suppress the truth. There is no access to justice because ordinary people cannot, and publishers will not, afford the huge legal bills involved in defending a libel case.

I have received no libel threats at all. Rather Schillings, acting on behalf of mercenary commander Tim Spicer, have threatened my publisher directly. In consequence my publisher has insisted not only that I remove vital facts from the book, but is attempting to insist that I include views and opinions which are not my own, and facts which are untrue, in the interest of “balance”.

The extraordinary thing is that the book is a memoir, and the large majority of things the publisher wishes me to exclude under legal pressure are things I was an eye witness to or even did myself. There is no protection at all for freedom of speech in the UK — the concept does not de facto exist in law here.

FBI begins widespread financial probe of 26 firms

Thursday, September 25, 2008

The FBI is investigating 26 firms and 1,400 individuals involved in the US financial crisis for fraud and “sub-prime lending practices”. Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae and AIG are among the firms being scrutinized after recently receiving federal bailouts.

Investigators, who are cooperating with the IRS, Postal Office, and other federal offices to complete their investigation, are concerned that major corporations may have also forced or bribed ratings agencies to favor them.

The probe, which is in early stages, began eight months ago when the FBI began taking a close look at the mortgage industry and widespread irresponsible loaning practices. At least one corporation has been raided, but so far no evidence of fraud has been found.

The FBI has questioned executives of each of the firms closely, and arrested two in June. An anonymous source told The Times that the firms had been ordered to “hold all papers and e-mails under lock and key” as the FBI scours the finances of each firm.

Many of the companies and individuals being investigated are at the center of the nationwide financial crisis and controversial bailout plans, and have been widely blamed for the country’s financial crisis. The investigation has come at a time when the eyes of many in the US and around the world are turned towards the financial markets, as Congress and politicians scramble to fix the crisis while the election date looms closer.

Officials told CNN that it would be a long time before the investigations were finished, adding a warning: “Don’t expect indictments tomorrow or next week or next month”.

Getting A Root Canal In Chicopee Ma: What You Need To Know

byadmin

Very few people actually realize the importance of good dental health in time. This is the reason cavities and decay are still the main cause of premature tooth loss in both children and adults. In case you are having a tooth decay problem, you will need a dentist to have a look at the teeth early enough as this could save your natural tooth. Here are some important things that you need to know about the process of getting a Root Canal in Chicopee MA.

What dental anomalies are restored by getting a root canal?

You can get a root canal procedure performed when any of the following problems happen:

* When you have cavities. Cavities that have reached and exposed the pulp cavity lead to bacterial infections that cause a lot of toothache. These bacteria are very destructive as it can spread the decay to the gums and the tooth root. The root canal procedure involves removing all the infected tissue and sealing the tooth to make sure that further infection does not occur.

* When you have a fractured tooth: When a tooth gets a fracture, its structure is compromised greatly. As a result, the tooth will be susceptible to decay. A root canal procedure will help save the tooth and protect it from further damage.

How is the procedure carried out?

* The first step involves the normal consultative meeting where the dentist will have a look at the affected teeth and determine whether the tooth should get a root canal.

* The other step will be setting up a date for the procedure. During the procedure, the dentist will sedate the patient if they have dental phobia. The sedative helps with relaxation. They will also use local anesthesia to numb the pain around the tooth.

* The dentist will expose the pulp cavity and remove all the rotting and infected tissue. This will leave a gap in the tooth. The dentist will use filler for this gap.

* The next part of the process is sealing the tooth to protect it from further damage. A crown will be put in place to stop any further damage.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Women in South Africa advancing in fields of science and technology

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology in South Africa, publicized results of a study on Tuesday on the role of women in the fields of science and technology in the country. Though women only make up thirty-three percent of publishing scientists in the country, their numbers have increased in recent years. When compared to a similar study from 2004, trends show increased enrollment of women in higher education.

Pandor was disappointed by the dearth of individuals that attended the announcement of the results of the study at the Parliament of South Africa. “It shows the degree to which science does – or doesn’t – matter to South Africans,” said Pandor. Prior to her role as Minister of Science and Technology, Pandor had served as Minister of Education of South Africa.

“It shows the degree to which science does – or doesn’t – matter to South Africans.”

Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a woman scientist in South Africa, commented to News24 that some educational organizations in the country were “really, really hostile to women”.

Pandor highlighted problems affecting women and specifically black women in the country from increased participation in science, including “financial difficulties before and during tertiary studies, gender stereotyping, legacies of disadvantage in black communities, negative dynamics at workplaces, and the lack of attention to women’s specific needs”.

Women in the country are advancing against men in science fields, particularly engineering, agricultural studies and biology. At present there are a greater number of women than men among enrollments for degrees in higher education, and among individuals obtaining those degrees. According to The Times, “their biggest gain has been in health sciences, where women earned more than half the doctorates awarded in 2005”. Pandor emphasized a current need for additional women to enter the fields of technology and engineering.

The announcement at Parliament in South Africa was part of the launch of the “Facing the Facts 2009” booklet, which was published by a sub-committee of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), Science, Engineering and Technology for Women (SET4W). Dr. Romilla Maharaj of SET4W presented the report to Parliament, and stated that enrollment by women in higher education had increased by one percent from a previous study. Dr. Maharaj noted that women were still currently in the minority among individuals with degrees in higher education.

Tips For Working With New Home Builders In Fort Wayne

byAlma Abell

After spending the last few years acquiring a tract of land and setting aside money for building a new home, it is finally time to get to work. The next task is finding a professional who can turn the plans for the house into a reality. Here are some things to keep in mind when working with one of the New Home Builders In Fort Wayne during the course of the project.

Choosing the Right Professional

When considering different New Home Builders In Fort Wayne, it pays to look beyond the quotes for the construction and consider a few other factors. For example, does the builder in question have an up to date business license? How much liability coverage will the builder carry for the project? What type of reputation does the builder have in the local community? If the answers to these questions are positive, then that professional is a good fit for the project.

Remember that how well the builder communicates with the client is also a factor. When researching the professional prior to making a commitment, find out what others have to say about how easy it is to talk about issues surrounding the construction. If the builder is known to always have time to talk with the client and keeps the customer up to date on the progress, that is a good sign.

Visiting the Construction Site

Rest assured that the contractor and the construction team did expect the client to visit the site from time to time. Remember that if the contractor does require the client to wear protective gear during the visit, it is best to comply. The contractor is only doing so in order to protect the client from sustaining an injury.

It also helps to not wander around the site without having a member of the construction team nearby. Construction sites are safe for those who know where to go and what types of precautions to take. If an area needs to be avoided today, it is usually because some specific type of construction is underway. It will be easy enough to check out that area at a later date.

For anyone who is ready to start work on a new home, call the team at Lancia Homes today. It will not take long for the construction to be completed, and the new owner can make plans to move in without any delay.
