Explosion in Turkey kills seventeen

Saturday, August 2, 2008

Reuters, AFP, the Associated Press are reporting that a gas explosion in a Turkish school killed at least seventeen girls Friday.

Reuters reports the initial death toll at sixteen, with 27 injured. The number of deaths later rose to 17 when a body was removed from the rubble. Two survivors were pulled from the rubble as rescuers worked into the night. One girl is still missing.

“We won’t stop until we find her,” village mayor Mehmet Demirgul, told the Associated Press.

About fifty students and teachers were in the school, where some had gathered on for Islamic study in the three-story structure in the village of Balcilar, near Taskent in the Konya province .

Merve Avci, a 13-year-old, slightly injured student spoke to the Anatolian news agency: “I was in the part of the building which didn’t collapse with five of my friends immediately after the explosion, and we felt flames rising from the downstairs to upper floors.”

Anatolian says that Avci was in the process of washing before pre-dawn prayers, when a noise in the building’s kitchen led Avci and some teacher to investigate. She says she saw a loose gas pipe before being ordered back to her room. She says she smelled gas coming from somewhere above her room before the explosion.

“We think the collapse was caused by a gas canister explosion in the building, given the burns on the injured,” Konya province health service official Galip Sef told Reuters.

Mayor Demirgul said a leak in a pipe carrying liquefied petroleum gas is the probable cause of the pre-dawn blast.

“We are hearing voices. I believe those inside the rubble will be saved,” Demirgul told reporters, according to the Associated Press and Reuters.

The Associated Press reports that a small portion of all three stories of the building were left standing. This is confirmed by images displayed on the Reuters website.

The building is owned by a religion foundation and is under investigation when Turkish authorities found an non-approved annex to the structure, according to AFP.

The explosion is unrelated to the bomb blast in northern Turkey on July 28.

6 Unthinkable Mistakes In List Building For Online Marketers

By Norberto Narciso

Being an Online Marketer myself, I am amazed by what I have observed among my fellow online marketers on how they spent so much money on list building… with no profitable results.

A little soul-searching and focus are needed on what and how it should be done to be effective. Only then you will be getting the results that you wanted.

Failure to realize these mistakes will surely lead to dissapointments and frustrations along the way.

Here they are;:

1. No clear vision on what needs to be done

This is due to information overload. Most of the time when I am attending a live seminars for online business, it is a very common sight that the hosts will be selling their products to the audience. Most of my friends will rush through the line with the intention to buy. I normally ask them, how many products you have purchased similar to this one? The common answer is, “certainly this is not my first and neither this is my last”.

2. Believing that once your website is published online, tons of visitors will just come

This is a serious mistake that happens especially to most beginners. But I can not blame them, as I myself being one of them when I started. Sometimes you are led to believe by some Gurus that an online business is just a “click of computer mouse” and you will make much money. This is far from the truth especially when you are a beginner in online business.

3. Website does not have a “call for an action” to capture the visitors information

This is a big waste. You’ve just spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars to build your website but no options included to capture the visitor’s relevant information (usually, first name and email address). Youve got to make sure that is included in your website, otherwise your online list building effort will just go down the drain, and so is your money.

4. Being nave that the visitor will give what you are looking for without getting something in return

In the old days, the business owner might be perceived as the King and the Customer might be under his mercy. But the reverse is true in today’s digital age. Relationship building is the key in today’s business climate. You’ve got to give in something preferably for free, in order to take something in return (name and email address) from your visitors.

5. Knowledge limitation in Traffic sources

This is a heavily guarded information in online business, believe it or not. Traffic is the “life-blood” of the online business. Therefore, it is very important to know the basic sources of traffic which you can tap for the survival of your online business. Without good stock of knowledge in Traffic sources, your online business will not progress as it should.

6. Lack of commitment

This is very common for beginners especially when they realized that the perceived easy business, is actually not an easy one! When disappointments are evident, they start to slow down and look for another online business. You need to be committed to finish what you have started and make it successful before switching for another online business. Mastery is the key.

Article marketing has many advantages that you can imagine, especially for beginners. Though writing is not everybodys cup of tea, but at least a free or cheaper option in traffic generation exists. I hate writing myself at the beginning but you will never know what will happen after seeing your first complete written article. In my case, it opens up another hobby and a chance to help someone in online business with interest in Article Marketing.

Priests jailed for $8.6 million theft

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Two Roman Catholic Church priests in the United States, were sentenced to prison for theft. They were convicted of stealing over US$8 million from St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Delray Beach, Florida.

Retired Monsignor John A. Skehan and Reverend Francis B. Guinan were accused in 2006 of misappropriation of funds from the church collection plates and church bequests.

Judge Jeffrey Colbath handed down the sentence on Skehan who received 14 months in prison followed by seven years on probation. He plead guilty in January 2009 to grand theft of over $100,000. The defense, prosecutors and Diocese of Palm Beach had requested probation for Skehan, who is 81 years old. Skehan has paid back $750,000.

“The court finds the defendant is not merely sorry because he got caught, but is truly shameful, embarrassed and remorseful,” Judge Jeffrey Colbath said. “The crime of the defendant was pure greed unmasked. There was not a shred of moral necessity to excuse the defendant’s crime.”

Circuit Judge Krista Marx sentenced Guinan who received four years in prison and was found guilty of theft of just under $100,000.

“No matter how many good works you have performed in your many years as a priest, your legacy will always be one of thievery and deceit,” Judge Krista Marx said.Skehan had invested in a Co. Clare cottage, a Co. Kilkeeny pub, and two penthouse condominiums. As well as real estate he had purchased a collection of gold coins worth around $300,000. Both priests had embarked on gambling holidays and real estate ventures.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Afghanistan suicide bomb leaves seven Americans dead

Thursday, December 31, 2009

A suicide bomber attacked an American base in the Khowst region on the Pakistani border of Afghanistan, leaving seven American CIA officers dead and six injured. No American or NATO military personnel were killed or injured in the attack on Forward Operating Base Chapman.

It appears that the suicide bomber, reportedly wearing an Afghan National Army uniform, blew himself up in either the gym or the dining facility of Base Chapman.

In a statement on the Voice of Jihad web page, the Taliban claimed responsiblity for the attack, alleging 20 “CIA employees” were killed in the incident.

The Chapman Base is a converted military base which is now being used for civilian reconstruction operations, although military personnel are still located on the base. Camp Salerno, the main base in the Khowst province, has been the target of many attacks in recent weeks.

Recent attacks have been focused on foreign civilians, such as an incident in October in which 7 foreign and 3 Afghan civilians were killed in an attack at a UN guest house. The CIA has not lost this many operatives in nearly 25 years and the last time CIA agents were killed was in 2003.

Tummy Tuck: The 411 On Staples And Sutures}

Submitted by: Rena Graham

A tummy tuck or what is also known as an abdominoplasty is one of the most popular shaping cosmetic procedures. Although it may have some controversial issues, this did not discourage clients to go right ahead with it. So if you are one of those interested to get a trimmed and tighter form, it is also helpful to know about what you are getting yourself into. One particular concern that clients have known which one is better in giving you a scar less and easier healing process staples or sutures?

Of course you have to be closed up after a tummy tuck surgery, and for this a surgeon will either use a staple or sutures. Questions have been raised as to which one would be better especially when reducing the incidence of scarring. For this, both have their own advantages and downside in their relation to the healing process.

Sutures were the conventional way to close a wound layer by layer, from the muscles, fascia, to the skin. They can either be absorbable or non-absorbable, with their use depending on the body part which has to be closed. For internal organs, absorbable sutures are used allowing them to eventually absorb overtime as the organs close. For external use, such as skin closure which is also done in a tummy tuck, a non-absorbable suture is often used. This would have to be taken off after a couple of weeks once the skin has fully closed together in order to prevent infection. An advantage about sutures is that they provide a finer closure, making the scars less visible.

The disadvantage with sutures is that it takes too much time to finish, especially with a tummy tuck incision which runs from hip to hip. There is also a chance that it might not turn out aesthetically pleasing especially if done by an inexperienced surgeon. Another problem with a poorly done suture line is the quality of wound closure. If it is not properly closed, this will only introduce infection, adding more serious complications.

Surgical staples on the other hand are a relatively new method than sutures, and these are introduced because it allows faster closure. It is also considered to be more consistent and accurate and it results to an improved patency of closed wounds. Surgical staples come in either stainless steel or plastic material, and they are put in place using a special stapler.

They are easier to use when closing a tummy tuck wound because closure will be done by simply applying the staples. It no longer needs the certain skill from the surgeon and it also hastens the time of surgery. A study supports that staples also reduce the incidence of infection because the element of human error is significantly reduced. Staples can also be removed much earlier compared to sutures.

Some patients complain about the outcome of surgical staples in that they can result to spitting. This is happens when the staples are placed too close to the skin, eroding the surface which then forms abscesses. However this can be treated with iodine and antibiotics.

These are just general information regarding surgical staples and sutures. For in depth information on which you think would be best for your tummy tuck procedure, it is better to discuss this with your surgeon during a consult.

With the Climate Conference in Bali having come to a successful conclusion, Wikinews journalist Sean Heron interviewed Christoph Bals from the German NGO Germanwatch on his opinion of the outcome, and an outlook on the future negotiations. Christoph is the Senior Political Executive of Germanwatch, Co-Author of the Climate protection-Index and did lobby work on Bali.

Poker’s all about luck, says Swiss Supreme Court

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

The Supreme Court in Lausanne, Switzerland has ruled that Texas hold ’em poker is a game of luck, rather than a game of skill. As a result, only casinos can host poker tournaments in Switzerland. Private games with friends, even where money is at stake, are still permitted under the ruling.

Poker tournaments had been growing in popularity in the country, with many events held in hotels and bars. Such venues do not have to pay the 50% tax on profits levied on licensed casinos, nor comply with regulations combating money laundering and gambling addiction. Poker is now categorised alongside roulette and slot machines, which as games of luck can only be played inside casinos. Mathematics, strategy, and bluffing were less important in determining the result than chance, said the judges, overturning a lower court ruling to the opposite effect, and disagreeing with the stance of the country’s Federal Gaming Commission.

Before the ruling, it had been estimated by the Swiss Federation of Casinos that there were about 100 unlicensed poker tournaments every weekend. A Swiss poker website, SwissPokerTour.ch, has described the result as “a black day for all amateur poker players in Switzerland.”
